Saw this fun post at “pingdom” website and thought it was worth a mention to see how far copy protection has come.

You all may know that the CTO of Nalpeiron was once a cracker before he moved over to the “other side” to create systems to help Software Developers slow down his former buddies.

Today of course we have web services driven software activation and copy protection systems that end users simply have to “click once and they are done” which makes life a lot easier and simpler.

In most cases all you can hope for with these software copy protection methods of old and today is to keep a proportion of your revenues from those that are “casual” pirates i.e.. have a user friendly mechanism that prevents active copying as we all know that with any form of software there will always be a weak point to attack if you have enough time and resources.

Here are some the great pictures of “protection” mechanisms dreamed up by software developers to slow down the software pirates!
